Prayers for the Communion and the Collection

Is it nothing to you, all you who pass by? Look around and see. Is any suffering like my suffering that was inflicted on me, that the LORD brought on me in the day of his fierce anger? (Lam. 1:12).

Prayer Before Partaking of the Bread

Lord, you are the Lamb of God who takes away the sin of the world. Even though you were in very nature God, you did not consider equality with God something to be grasped. Instead, you became a servant. As a man you humbled yourself and became obedient to death—even death on a cross!

You were despised and rejected by men, a man of sorrows, and familiar with suffering. Like one from whom men hide their faces, you were despised, and we did not esteem you. You took up our infirmities and carried our sorrows. You were smitten by God and afflicted. But you were pierced for our transgressions, and you were crushed for our iniquities. By your wounds we are healed.

Lord, we know that you are the bread of life that has come down from heaven into this world to give us life. As we eat this bread in memory of you, we remember your body, which was given for us. We pray that we may eat in a worthy manner. Amen (Jn. 1:29; Phil. 2:6-8; Isa. 53:3-5; Jn. 6:35, 48, 51;1 Cor. 11:24, 27).

Prayer Before Partaking of the Cup

Father, you loved the world so much that you gave your one and only Son. You have demonstrated your love for us in this: While we were still sinners, Christ died for us. We know that you are for us, because you did not spare your own Son. Because of your great love for us, you have made us alive with Christ. It is by grace that we have been saved.

Long ago you tested Abraham by asking him to offer his son Isaac. Afterwards you told him, "Now I know that you fear God, because you have not withheld from me your son, your only son." Likewise, we humbly and thankfully say to you, our God, "Now we know that you love us, because you have not withheld from us your Son Jesus, your one and only Son."

As we drink this cup we proclaim your Son's death until he returns. We pray that we may drink in a worthy manner. In Jesus' name we pray, Amen (Jn. 3:16; Rom. 5:8; 8:31-32; Eph. 2:4-5; Gen. 22:12; 1 Cor. 11:26-27).

Prayer Before the Collection

God, our Father, you are the source of every good and perfect gift. We give thanks to you, for you are good; your love endures forever.

Please accept our offering, given freely, given cheerfully, and given to honor the Lord himself. And in everything may thanks be given to God through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen (Jas. 1:17; 1 Chron. 16:34; 2 Cor. 8:19; 9:7; Eph. 5:20; Rom. 7:25).
