A Prayer for a Time of Serious Illness
by Joel Stephen Williams
"Is any one of you in trouble? He should pray. . . . Is any one of you sick? He should call the elders of the church to pray over him and anoint him with oil in the name of the Lord. And the prayer offered in faith will make the sick person well; the Lord will raise him up" (James 5:13-15).
"This is the confidence we have in approaching God: that if we ask anything according to his will, he hears us. And if we know that he hears us--whatever we ask--we know that we have what we asked of him" (1 John 4:14-15).
Hear my prayer, O Lord, listen to my cry for help; be not deaf to my weeping. Be not far from me, O God. Come quickly, O my God, to help me. Lord, I pray that I might enjoy good health and that all may go well with me, and that it might go well with my soul. Lord, I pray that I will not be like Asa of long ago, who even though his disease was severe, he did not seek help from you, but only from the physicians.
Lord, have mercy on me and heal me. Be merciful to me, Lord, for I am faint. Heal me, for my body is in agony. I am filled with pain; there is no health in my body. I appeal to you, because you have regard for those who are weak and you will sustain them on their sickbed. You can take away sickness. You can heal all diseases. Your Son, during his incarnate life, was able to heal every disease and sickness. This I believe.
Father, I pray that you will not only heal my disease but also heal my soul by forgiving my sins by means of the stripes of your only Son, the Suffering Servant. Yet, I understand that being with you matters more than good health. You guide me with your counsel, and afterward you will take me into glory. Whom have I in heaven but you? And earth has nothing I desire besides you. My flesh and my heart may fail, but you, O God, are the strength of my heart and my portion forever.
Lord, may this prayer be according to your will. In all things, may your will be done. As one who is able, may you meet all my needs by your abounding grace according to your glorious riches in Christ Jesus. To my God and Father be glory for ever and ever. Amen.
