A Penitential Prayer

Hear my prayer, 0 Lord; give ear to my supplications!
In your faithfulness and righteousness answer me!
Enter not into judgment with your servant;
for no man living is righteous before you.
As for me, I say, "0 Lord, be gracious to me;
heal me, for I have sinned against you!"
Both l and my ancestors have sinned;
we have committed iniquity, we have done wickedly.

0 God, you know my folly;
the wrongs I have done are not hidden from you.
For my iniquities have gone over my head;
they weigh like a burden too heavy for me.
I confess my iniquity,
I am sorry for my sin.
Remember not the sins of my youth, or my transgressions;
according to your steadfast love remember me,
for your goodness' sake, 0 Lord!
For your name's sake, 0 Lord,
pardon my guilt, for it is great.
Consider my affliction and my trouble, and forgive all my sins.

Have mercy on me, 0 God, according to your steadfast love;
according to your abundant mercy blot out my transgressions.
Wash me thoroughly from my iniquity,
and cleanse me from my sin!
For I know my transgressions,
and my sin is ever before me.
Against you, you only, have I sinned,
and done that which is evil in your sight,
So that you are justified in your sentence
and blameless in your judgment.

Wash me, and I shall be whiter than snow.
Fill me with joy and gladness.
Hide your face from my sins,
and blot out all my iniquities.
Create in me a clean heart, 0 God,
and put a new and right spirit within me.
Cast me not away from your presence,
and do not take your Holy Spirit from me.
Restore to me the joy of your salvation,
and give me a willing spirit to uphold me.

If you, 0 Lord, should keep a record of iniquities,
Lord, who could stand?
But there is forgiveness with you,
therefore you are to be feared.
You are merciful and gracious,
slow to anger and abounding in steadfast love.
You will not always chide,
nor will you keep your anger for ever.

You do not deal with me according to my sins,
nor requite me according to my iniquities.
For as the heavens are high above the earth,
so great is your steadfast love toward those who fear you;
As far as the east is from the west,
so far do you remove my transgressions from me.
As a father pities his children,
so do you pity those who fear you.
For you know my frame;
you remember that I am dust.

Blessed is one whose transgression is forgiven,
whose sin is covered.
Blessed is the one to whom the Lord imputes no iniquity,
and in whose spirit there is no deceit.
When I declared not my sin, my body wasted away
through my groaning all day long.
For day and night your hand was heavy upon me;
my strength was dried up as by the heat of summer.
I acknowledged my sin to you,
and I did not hide my iniquity;
I said, "I will confess my transgressions to the Lord";
then you did forgive the guilt of my sin.

I thank you my Lord, in the name of your Son Jesus.
